Class AA Girls State Soccer (Daily Southtown)
A close loss in the state tournament semifinals is painful. A shootout loss in the semifinals is especially heartbreaking. That’s what happened to Lincoln-Way Central’s girls soccer team Saturday in the Class AA semifinals at North Central College in Naperville.
WIAA sectional soccer: Xavier 2, Hayward 0 (The Appleton Post-Crescent)
LI Familiar faces, familiar places: With a berth at the WIAA Division 2 state girls soccer tournament at stake, the Hawks faced a familiar foe in a familiar place. In 2006, the Hawks advanced to the state tournament by defeating Hayward 3-0. This time, goals by Chelsea Colling and Ashley Barwick accounted for the scoring with the Hawks advancing to state tournament for the fifth consecutive year.
Soccer: Germany big winner over San Marino (Deutsche Welle)
In the Euro 2008 soccer qualifying round on Saturday, Germany crushed San Marino 6-0 in Nuremburg to move ahead of the Czech Republic on points at the top of Group D. The only surprise was that Germany, who beat San Marino 13-0 in their first match in September, took 45 minutes to open the scoring through Kevin Kuranyi before dominating the second half.
